I profiled 161 Perplexity citations across verified SaaS query sets to see what it actually trusts. The answer is more vendor-owned, pricing-aware, and source-forward than most teams assume.
Perplexity SEO is getting a lot of bad advice right now.
Some people treat it like Google with citations. Some treat it like ChatGPT with links. Neither one is quite right.
What makes Perplexity useful is also what makes it different. It is more source-forward than ChatGPT, more inspectable than most AI answer layers, and more likely to show you where it got the answer from.
So I wanted a cleaner question.
What does Perplexity actually cite?
That is the better starting point because this platform leaves a visible source trail. If you understand the citation mix, you get a much better feel for what kind of page can win here.
The main pattern
Let me make this simple.
Perplexity cited vendor_owned pages far more than anything else in the verified SaaS sample. The total was 123 citations across 80 domains.
After that, the support layer was much smaller:

That is the first correction I would make for most teams.
Perplexity is not mostly a Reddit engine in this dataset. It is still largely a vendor-page engine, just with a more visible support layer than many teams expect.
What that means for Perplexity SEO
This is why I do not think of Perplexity as “Google SEO with a chatbot wrapper.”
The platform still rewards strong owned pages. But the winning owned pages do not behave like broad marketing fluff. They behave more like inspectable answer assets.
They tend to help with one of these jobs:
- define the category
- compare options
- explain pricing
- support evaluation
That is a different content standard.
If your page is vague, indirect, or trying too hard to sound branded, Perplexity has more reason to skip it. If your page looks like a useful source, it has a better chance to become part of the answer path.
The top domains tell a useful story
The top-cited domains in the study were not random.
The leaders included:

It tells you Perplexity is comfortable pulling from vendor-owned sources, but it still reinforces the answer with commercial evaluators, video content, and review-style environments. That is a healthier interpretation than “official sites win everything” or “third-party sites win everything.”
The better read is this: strong owned pages win with support.
Commercial intent was still vendor-led
This is the second useful pattern.
Commercial queries did not suddenly push vendor pages out of the mix. They still leaned heavily vendor-owned:

Perplexity is willing to cite the official site. It just seems to do that more confidently when the page is actually useful for evaluation instead of acting like a thin sales page.
That is why pricing pages, alternative pages, evaluator pages, and stronger category explainers matter so much. They give Perplexity something it can inspect and reuse.
The support layer is still part of the trust mix
This is where a lot of teams misread the platform.
They see that vendor pages dominate, then assume the off-site layer barely matters. That is too narrow.

What to build if you want Perplexity citations
This is the practical part.
If I were trying to improve Perplexity SEO from this study, I would not start with generic thought-leadership posts. I would start with owned pages that look more like inspectable answer sources.
The strongest candidates are:
- category explainers that define the market clearly
- alternatives pages that help buyers compare options
- pricing-aware pages that reduce ambiguity
- evaluation pages with stronger comparison logic
- support content that looks useful enough to cite, not just helpful enough to exist
This is also why I would not treat Perplexity like a pure blogging problem. The source mix does not support that. It supports a page-portfolio approach.
What not to overstate
There is an important boundary here.
This is not a same-query loser benchmark like the Google AI Overview study. Perplexity preserves the cited sources, but it does not give us the clean parallel set of uncited candidate pages that Google organic does.
So I would not pretend this study proves why one page lost to another inside the same exact Perplexity answer.
What it does give us is still valuable. It shows the shape of the trust mix.
That alone is enough to improve strategy because it tells you what kinds of pages, domains, and support layers keep showing up in the answer path.
My recommendation
If you want to win Perplexity citations, start by making your owned pages more source-worthy.
That means:
- clearer page purpose
- stronger category language
- better pricing and comparison context
- more inspectable proof
- cleaner support from review, video, and evaluator surfaces
Then use Perplexity the way the platform already wants to be used. Inspect the source trail. See who it keeps citing for your core queries. Compare those pages against your own. That is a better workflow than guessing from generic AI SEO advice.
Conclusion
Perplexity SEO is not mostly about tricking an AI system.
It is about becoming the kind of source Perplexity wants to cite in public.
In this study, that still meant vendor-owned pages first. But it also meant stronger support from YouTube, review environments, pricing surfaces, and evaluator content than many teams account for.
So if you want to improve Perplexity visibility, do not ask only, “How do I rank?”
Ask a better question.
